So, three days after starting work, having just graduated from university and set foot in a brand-new world, I found myself flying over these hills in a helicopter. I remember the first day I started working here at Distillerie Berta, almost 16 years ago now, like it was yesterday. I had been here three days and we had a Vietnamese author, Kien Nguyen, who had decided to spend a few days in the area, visiting us. Gianfranco didn't speak any English and I remember he came up to me and said "Ele, I need you. Because I don't speak English and I have to take this man out on a tour. So, three days after starting work, having just graduated from university and set foot in a brand-new world, I found myself flying over these hills in a helicopter. And it was absolutely amazing! I remember phoning my mother and she said, "Where on earth are you working?" Excellent question. Not even I knew! I was in a helicopter! It was the most fabulous experience, and it was extremely enriching because this writer told us about his life and his imprisonment in a camp in the Philippines after leaving Vietnam. Now he lives with his family in New York. It had a very enriching effect on us. It was wonderful to show him this area and to see the hills from above, in all their colours, so beautiful in autumn... I did get the chance to fly in a helicopter again but in a completely different situation, on my honeymoon and that, too, was incredible, but I have never flown over these hills again. And seeing them from above is something else.

I really love this area. I was born here and I grew up here. I work with wine so, obviously, the link is strong, but it goes much deeper than that. I adore all the local specialities. I love mushrooms, for example. Ever since I was a kid, about this time of year, my friends and I have always gone hunting for mushrooms. We leave early, around 4.30/5, and it's still dark when we get there. The great thing is that I don't even eat them! I give nearly all of them away. It's an exhausting hobby, like fishing; but the whole point of exhausting hobbies isn't so much the material gain as the fact of searching and finding, sometimes finding things you weren't even looking for.

This place is my realm! This is my corner of tranquillity, away from the machinery...here i am at peace. I like the bottles, their shape, their weight, and, when i take a break, i like to go out into the yard and look at all the hills around me, this fantastic land that embraces you. This is where i work, but i also find it relaxing: in this place, surrounded by so much tranquillity, i find peace.
