Oltre il Vallo

Oltre il Vallo

A journey from the Highlands to the Monferrato Region

It was May 2010 when a new project was launched in Mombaruzzo. Two organisations, the Berta family and Diageo Italia, joined forces. The idea was born: Oltre il Vallo, a fine grappa, aged in single malt Scotch whisky casks. The project unites two cultures: the artisanal passion of the Berta family and the craftsmanship of the finest Scottish tradition, represented by Diageo, a global leader in the premium spirits sector. Two very different cultures, united by a passion for distilling.

The name Oltre il Vallo (Beyond the Wall) evokes the fact that no one ever managed to cross the ancient fortifications of Hadrian’s Wall, the wall that represented the northernmost border of the Roman Empire in Britain for much of the period of Roman rule over these lands. A fortified wall that divided the island into two parts. No one ever crossed the border at that time but, today, the Highlands and the Monferrato region symbolically unite in this aged spirit. The casks, selected one by one, come from those distant lands, from the oldest and finest distilleries in Scotland: Lagavulin, Caol Ila and Mortlach, famous names that have made and continue to make the history of the finest Scotch whisky.
