Bric del Gaian

The sun on the briars

“It makes a sun on these briars, a glare of crickets and tuffs that I had forgotten. Here the heat more than comes down from the sky comes out from below – from the earth, from the bottom between the vines that seems to have eaten every green to go all in the vine. It’s a heat I like, it tastes like a smell: I’m in this smell too, I’m in it so many vintages and haymaking and flaking, so many flavors and so many cravings I didn’t know I had on me anymore.” Cesare Pavese, La Luna e i Falò.
Bric, Piedmontese for briar, denotes an elevation, usually the top of a hill; because of its altitude and exposure to the sun, many bricchi are strategic points for the production of high quality wines. Bric del Gaian literally means “Bricco di Galliano”-Mr. Galliano had a couple of hills planted with Muscat right in front of the old childhood home of Lidia, Paolo Berta’s wife and mother of Gianfranco and Enrico.
