Di Rose
The liquor of fairy tales
It is dawn: the sun rises again and with its rays bids good morning to the whole Earth. On the leaves and petals of the roses there remains one last gift from the moon, a few drops of moisture that, condensed, quench the flowers; it is the dew of the sun, in Latin ros solis. Hence the name Rosolio, a rose liqueur that originated in nuns’ convents as a small gift to offer to visiting gentlemen to ingratiate them. Low in alcohol, sweet, and incredibly pink: for these reasons it has always been considered an auspicious liquor, evoking lightness, sweetness, and fairy worlds. Traditionally given as a gift to newlyweds, Rosolio was made iconic by Bernardo Bertolucci, who included it in his masterpiece Novecento: but as we savor its rosy sweetness, we cannot help but think of the Blue Fairy, who gave Pinocchio a confetto filled precisely with Rosolio.
