Roccanivo
Stories of inventions and discoveries
Today, grappa is a precious distillate with a rich bouquet of flavors that immediately triggers the desire of those who smell it. But it was not always so. At the beginning of our history, back in 1947, grappa was little more than a modest distillate, considered good only for peasants who, with little pretension, carved out a moment of invigorating refuge from the heat of summer and the cold of winter in the fields. Needless to say, village people, those who could afford to buy grappa in stores instead of making it at home, did not even want to know about this poor man’s distillate. It is said that the best opportunities arise from the worst difficulties: and this story is no exception. Paolo Berta began storing the grappa he could not sell inside large wooden barrels; he did not yet imagine that, upon opening those barrels, he would have a great revolution on his hands. And what was the first Selezione grappa, aged long years in wooden barrels, to see the light of day on wine shop shelves? But of course Roccanivo; pure barbera daughter as we are of Monferrato, the name of the hill on which the Distilleries, for the past three years also a location for events.
