Four centuries of Muscat

Sant’Antonio is the name of a famous hill in Canelli, cultivated with muscat grapes. The Canelli or Moscato di Canelli DOCG appellation is an area lying between the provinces of Asti and Cuneo. Until 2020, this area was called Asti DOCG Sottozona Canelli; only a few years ago did it gain its own independence as a separate DOCG. The wines included in the DOCG are essentially all sparkling wines made from Muscat grapes; there are two Riserva appellations. Despite being a young appellation, Moscato has actually been cultivated in Canelli since the 1600s: in fact, there are records from the period that refer to a young, sweet, lively white wine that was widely produced and consumed in this very area of Asti.
